D20 Table: Pick a Goblin's Pocket

D20 Table: Pick a Goblin's Pocket

The goblins stand in a tight huddle, fiercely arguing over something. Meat? Trinkets? It’s impossible to tell—you don’t speak goblin. But theft? Theft is a language in which you’re fluent. They may not be the juiciest of marks, but who are you to refuse such an invitation? You slink closer, hand outstretched, hoping their pockets hold more treasures than teeth.

Roll a d20 to find out what our hero pilfers from these dubious marks...

1. An elaborate finger trap made from coiled rat sinew and splintered reeds. The moment you tug it, it snaps tight around your finger with a thwack. The goblin turns slowly toward you, grinning.

2. Two recently decapitated fish heads wrapped in a greasy scrap of cloth. They blink. You swear they blinked.

3. A small black beetle with long, twitching antennae. He gives you a look as if to say, “Who are you?”

4. A small collection of unblown dandelions wrapped in parchment paper.

5. A pouch of pebble-hard crickets. You worry that these are for eating.

6. One enormous toenail, clearly a trophy, sanded smooth along the edges and polished to a mirror shine.

7. A mummified frog wearing a tiny vest sewn from furry rat leather.

8. A 16-inch string of delicate snail shells. A gift for a lady goblin?

9. A cracked monocle with a spiderweb pattern of fractures.

10. One dozen glass marbles in assorted colors. Who would steal a child’s marbles?

11. A shiny brass button torn from a constable’s jerkin. It bears the emblem of the municipality you are currently in.

12. An artisan-quality hand drum assembled from stretched possum skin, accompanied by a small bone mallet.

13. A fist-sized clump of tangled hair (multiple species), held together with an elegant lady’s brooch.

14. A small brass key labeled “DO NOT LOSE.” Whatever it belongs to, the goblin just lost it.

15. A shank-style knife made from a shard of deep blue glass and wrapped in dirty twine. Whatever the goblin smashed to make it must have been downright elegant.

16. A still-warm pastry wrapped in wax paper. Recently boosted. Is it still safe to eat despite where it’s been?

17. A small wooden whistle that produces the sound of a human’s wheezing cough when blown.

18. A lantern constructed from wire and a stoppered bottle of thick green glass. Inside, a captured glow-worm pulses steadily, casting a soft emerald light. Grass clippings, a well-chosen twig perch, and a few measured drops of moisture suggest this is a well-loved pet rather than a prisoner.

19. An elegant silver table setting for one, composed of a salad fork, a dinner fork, a dainty teaspoon, and a butter knife. Each piece is engraved with the initials E.M.

20. A tattered map of the town and the outlying farms. On the northern outskirts, a crude circle marks an area labeled, “Goblin Hoarde.”

D20 Table: A Hearty Stew

D20 Table: A Hearty Stew

The cook stands beside an immense kettle suspended on a tripod over a roaring campfire. He stirs the simmering contents with a long wooden spoon, humming to himself as steam curls into the night air. When he notices you approaching, his face brightens and he beckons you closer. “Stew tonight,” he exclaims proudly. “My own favorite recipe. Bring your bowl!”

You peer into the cauldron. Roll a D20 to learn what hearty, humble, or downright questionable concoction your travelers will encounter tonight.

1. The pot is empty. The cook ventures that you could rub a piece of bread along the bottom and pick up a bit of flavor from the grease… but there’s no bread left either. Undeterred, you run a fingertip along the rim, hoping for the faintest taste — and hiss in pain as you scorch yourself on the still-hot iron.

2. A weak stock that tastes mostly of steam, with a whole onion trying its best to season the entire pot. You wonder which of you will get it.

3. You fear the cook may be simple… the “stew” is clearly leftover porridge from this morning’s breakfast.

4. A pale, flavorless vegetable water interrupted only by a few slivers of turnip and a wilted sprig of parsley.

5. Carrot coins and dried venison drifting beneath a thin film of grease. The cook places a piece of hardtack in your bowl to soak.

6. A plain but energizing stew of dried beef, stale bread bits, and watery broth “borrowed” from yesterday’s kettle.

7. A forest-green nettle and potato purée — shockingly tasty once you get past the color.

8. A hearty beef-and-beet stew, its deep red broth sweetened with tiny shards of honeycomb.

9. A fisherman’s “dock pot” bubbling with mussels, crab claws, and seawater broth steeped in roasted fennel.

10. A mountain-foraged delight of stone carrots, golden onions, and chunks of smoked ram meat. “Sticks to your ribs,” the cook boasts as he ladles it out.

11. A traveler’s lentil stew thickened with tomatoes and cumin… and chili powder… lots and lots of chili powder.

12. A creamy pumpkin-and-saffron stew with toasted hazelnuts floating on top like tiny boats.

13. A rich boar-and-apple stew whose simmering scent draws uninvited guests from the forest.

14. A dwarven ironpot classic: stout-braised lamb, malt vinegar, and pearl onions beneath a bubbling layer of melted brown cheese.

15. A thick barley-and-oxtail stew enriched with roasted onions and cracked black pepper, said to restore stamina after a long march.

16. A coastal favorite of clams, sweetcorn, and smoked bacon, served with hot, generously buttered biscuits.

17. A bright spring vegetable stew — peas, carrots, radish greens — finished with a swirl of fresh goat’s milk. A mug of thick mead awaits each diner.

18. A smoky fish chowder layered with river trout, leeks, and cream, served with a hunk of fire-warmed black bread.

19. A hunter’s feast of venison shank, root vegetables, and crushed pepperroot, slow-cooked until the meat falls apart.

20. A legendary stew of giant boar, meadow herbs, and wild garlic. There is fresh-baked bread — a full loaf per person — and slices of warm apple pie for dessert. Besides the food… there’s wine. A heart-warming red that fills the night with laughter and quality conversation. After the last bowl is served, the cook wipes his hands on his apron, produces a battered mandolin, and begins to play familiar campfire songs. Voices rise. Everyone sings along with gusto beneath the stars. You will remember this meal — and this night — for the rest of your life.

D20 Table: Pick a Peasant’s Pocket

D20 Table: Pick a Peasant's Pocket

You slip through the crowded marketplace, past stalls heaped with vegetables and neatly folded squares of homespun cloth. You sidle up behind an unsuspecting villager, your fingers twitching for mischief...

Roll a d20 to discover what your unlucky (or lucky) thief just pulled from the pocket of a random villager.

1. A torn wanted poster featuring the thief’s face.
2. A bloody tooth wrapped in cloth.
3. The pocket is empty… but noticeably sticky…

5. A rough draft of a love letter to the miller’s daughter.
6. A small stick that ends in a fork.
7. A loose fistful of seed grain.
8. A smooth river stone painted like an eye.
9. A small tuft of lamb's wool. Sooooo soooooft…
10. A single copper coin.

12. Two sugar cubes.
13. A heel of bread wrapped in a handkerchief.
14. A perfectly usable candle stub.
15. A paid merchant’s receipt for “one dozen eggs,” for pick up tomorrow morning.
16. A jagged piece of flint and a steel striker.
17. A leather pouch of pipeweed.
18. A tiny sewing kit: two dull needles and a loop of mismatched thread.
19. A sturdy trowel with a smooth wooden handle.
20. A tiny gold piece, riddled with tooth marks.
